Planning a Corporate Holiday Party can be a bit stressful. My job is to assist Corporate Event Planners in the entire process of set up, check in, entertainment, décor, production, venues, menu selections, gifts for the guests, and clean up. This way as the Event Planner you can relax and enjoy the Holiday Celebration as well.

I had the wonderful opportunity to work with KW Engineering in planning their Holiday Party. Tiffany contacted me in September by submitting an online Inquiry. She included most of the details she was looking for. The party was to be held on December 17, at Chabot Space and Science Center.

The Menu Selection was fun and we provided a tasting for Tiffany and Christine at their company Headquarters in Oakland. They choose the following Menu.

Nestled against a wooded slope in the private and secluded Saratoga hills is Montalvo Arts Center, a lovely complex with a variety of venues for concerts, weddings, corporate events and private parties. For weddings, the focal point of this estate is its beautiful Mediterranean-style mansion, Villa Montalvo. Built in 1912 as the private summer residence of Senator James Duval Phelan, this National Register Historic Landmark is now home to an arboretum and a nonprofit center for the arts.

An inviting one-way road leads up to Villa Montalvo. As you round the last turn, you get your first glimpse of the estate’s expansive manicured lawns and colorful gardens, as well as the mansion’s terracotta-tile roof, light stucco walls and wide veranda. To your left, you’ll also see the Love Temple, one of two ceremony sites on the grounds; it’s an open-air, white-columned pavilion set at the end of a wide, rose-lined brick path featuring historic marble statues. Couples get married on its steps, with a view of the surrounding Mediterranean garden and the Villa and woods in the background.

Directly behind the Villa, the Oval Garden offers a lush garden setting complete with classical statues and wisteria-covered pergolas. This open-air courtyard is an intimate and delightful place for a ceremony; a brick pathway serves as the center aisle, and a column-supported arcade is the backdrop for taking vows.

The Villa’s first floor and outdoor patios are available for receptions. Guests can sip champagne and sample hors d’oeuvres in the Spanish courtyard, and dine on the veranda while enjoying splendid views of the estate’s lawns and gardens. Reserve well in advance. The Montalvo Arts Center is an extraordinary site for an elegant and sophisticated wedding.

We all have our own idea of the perfect getaway, a place to escape to when the world is too much for us. For some, it’s a little grass hut on a tropical island; for others it’s a villa on the Riviera. For Oliver and Isabel Stine, however, it was a Japanese garden.

Inspired by exhibits they saw at the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition, the Stines purchased 16 acres near Saratoga on which to build Hakone Gardens, their summer home. In 1932, the property was bought by a financier, who owned it until 1960 when six families bought it. Then the City of Saratoga purchased the Gardens in 1966, and hired a Japanese landscape gardener to restore them to their former splendor. The Gardens are now maintained under the watchful eye of the nonprofit Hakone Foundation.

Because Hakone is open to the public seven days a week until 5pm, outdoor events must be held after 5. If you’re an early bird, you can also schedule your event in the morning before the facility opens. During these times you have the entire Garden to yourself. Larger weddings often take place in the gravel area near the Koi Pond (the Garden area) while truly intimate ceremonies of 15 or fewer are held in the Wisteria Pavilion, a charming wooden structure perched on the banks of the pond and entwined with wisteria. Afterwards, guests can walk the short distance to the Madrone Mound, a gravel-topped rise shaded by an arching oak tree and bamboos, which is equally fine for a seated or standing reception.

Those wishing to tie the knot during more conventional hours are welcome to do so—indoors. Hakone features two meticulously detailed and authentic Japanese structures that are available for four-hour or all-day rentals. The Lower House has redwood walls in the reception area, a tea ceremony room (not available to the public, unless you’re going to have a tea ceremony there) and a shoe-removal rock near the entrance. The Cultural Exchange Center is a replica of a 19th-century Kyoto tea merchant’s shop and living quarters. Built in 1991, the building was assembled in Japan using traditional methods and materials, then set up on its present site by Japanese carpenters. Display cases containing various Japanese artifacts line the walls of the reception area, and elsewhere in the building there is a traditional tatamied tea ceremony room. The Cultural Exchange Deck, overlooking the Santa Clara Valley, is perfect for a breathtaking ceremony, formal seated dinner or a more relaxed cocktail reception.

Weddings are popular at Hakone Gardens, and on moonlit summer nights they’re nothing short of enchanting. Business functions also benefit from the quiet and peaceful atmosphere. In fact, the way we see it, any type of event—whether indoors or out—will be enhanced by these beautiful surroundings.

If you’ve seen the movie classic, The Wizard of Oz, you’ll recall the scene where Dorothy arrives in Oz, looks around, and says to her little dog, “I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore, Toto.”

Well, you won’t think you’re in California anymore when you see Clos LaChance Winery. This majestic facility, with its white stucco and fieldstone walls, red-tile roof and exquisitely landscaped gardens, will have you wondering if you’ve been magically transported to the hills of Provence. But the only magic involved here was the unique vision of owners Bill and Brenda Murphy, brought to reality by talented designers and architects.

Located adjacent to the sixth hole of the exclusive CordeValle Golf Course, and overlooking acres of vineyards and open land, Clos LaChance surrounds you with beauty and elegance the minute you enter the grounds. A petite courtyard, graced by a bubbling fountain and abloom with fragrant herbs and flowers, welcomes you to the winery. A small ceremony or champagne reception is enchanting in this sunlit space.

After pausing here to savor its delights, continue on into the winery itself and the aptly named Grand Salon. This expansive room has tiled floors, pale taupe walls and ceiling with dark wood moldings, and French doors framed in deep red-and-brown brocade drapes. The room’s focal point is an imposing stone fireplace; above it, a gilded mirror reflects the light cast by the wrought-iron chandelier, embellished with gilt leaves and flowers. A gorgeous tapestry, depicting a Roman scene, adorns one wall. Incidentally, throughout the winery, all of the furnishings and art are genuine antiques—even the books in the bookcase in the Salon’s foyer!

Just off the Grand Salon is the Tasting Library, a cheerful room featuring an unusual zinc-topped tasting bar, a massive wooden back-bar, and little cocktail tables that came from an English pub. For something really unusual, entertain your guests in the Cellar Room. Built entirely of dry-stacked sandstone, and lit by a wrought-iron candle chandelier, this cozy underground space can host intimate dinners, bridal toasts or photos around the antique refectory table.

Outside the Salon and Tasting Library is the Grand Terrace, paved with flagstones and bordered by white rose bushes. Seated dining takes place here, before moving into the Grand Salon for music and dancing. Below the Grand Terrace, a velvety semicircle of grass called the Tapestry Lawn is enclosed by a stone wall and framed by a silhouette of the rolling hills. A wooden arbor laced with climbing roses is the preferred place for couples to tie the knot. Another option is the Mulberry Grove, a pretty spot for sun-dappled ceremonies and social hours.

The outdoor areas are all lavished with horticultural treasures, such as lush chestnut trees and oleanders; colorful Santa Barbara daisies and salvias; aromatic lavender and roses. Even the briefest visit to Clos LaChance reveals a meticulous attention to detail, a quality shared by the topnotch event planning and wedding coordination services offered here. Clos LaChance was named after co-owner Brenda LaChance Murphy, but “chance” is also the French word for “luck,” and we’re sure that you’ll feel extremely fortunate when you discover this outstanding facility.

With its façade of tall arched windows and imposing entryway, the San Jose Woman’s Club building makes a graceful impression. Completed in 1929, the Spanish-style structure has hosted a wide variety of events over the years, and many couples continue to be married here.

The foyer, with its fireplace niche and tiled stairway, is often used for small ceremonies; the stairs serve as both an entrance for the bride and a convenient spot for photos. It’s also a relaxed space for sipping champagne and mingling.

The Ballroom, however, is the building’s pièce de résistance. A high, slightly vaulted ceiling spans the enormous room, and light from a wall of tall arched windows brings out the shine on the maple floor. The floor itself is unusual in that it has a special “spring” construction to enhance dancing. Up above, the beams crisscrossing the ceiling are all hand-stenciled, and the ornate parchment-and-wrought-iron chandeliers glow amber when lit. You can exchange vows on the curtained stage, while your favorite tune is played on the Steinway baby grand piano.

The Ballroom has plenty of space for a large reception, but if you need additional seating, the adjacent Tea Room comes in very handy. Separated from the Ballroom by two sliding glass pocket doors, it has easy access to the kitchen via a pass-through counter at one end. Like the Ballroom, its pastel unadorned walls make a neutral backdrop for potted plants and flowers. The Club offers a great deal of flexibility, not only for weddings, but for private parties, seminars, concerts or lectures—and its fees are very affordable.
